Bernie Harchar began his career with the Euclid Fire Department on April 1, 1976. For 25 years, he served as a firefighter and EMT-D, living through an era that transformed emergency medical response and challenged firefighters with events that changed the nation.
He retired from Euclid on April 1, 2001, but retirement from one department was not the end of his service.

Bernie also served the Munson Fire Department in Munson Township, Ohio, ultimately leading the department as Fire Chief through July 2012.
That meant leadership, responsibility, training, difficult calls, and standing beside the people who depended on him when the stakes were highest.
Perhaps one of his proudest contributions came in the wake of Hurricane Katrina in 2005.
Bernie helped fellow firefighters and residents of St. Bernard Parish, Louisiana, recover from the devastation left behind by one of the most catastrophic storms in American history.
Hurricane Katrina claimed more than 1,800 lives and remains one of the deadliest hurricanes in U.S. history. For Bernie, the response was not simply something to watch unfold from Ohio. He put his boots on the ground and went to help.
As Fire Chief, he led a team from Ohio to provide relief assistance, standing shoulder to shoulder with fellow firefighters and residents who were facing the enormous work of rebuilding after the storm.
Bernie's boots-on-the-ground support exemplified that spirit. When people needed help, the call did not have to come from his own town, his own station, or even his own state.
That is bravery. That is dedication. That is service.

When we created the original Chief's Reserve™ image, we thought we had captured the whole firehouse story. Then Pat, the Chief's Wife, saw it.
The helmet was there. The bandana was there. The rope was there. But Pat noticed something we hadn't.
And she was right. A firehouse without a ladder? Not on her watch.
Pat, the Chief's Wife, took one look at the first Chief's Reserve™ photo and immediately spotted it: there was no ladder.
Anyone who knows the fire service knows that little details matter. The ladder belongs in the picture. So we listened.
“Put the ladder in.”
And just like that, Chief's Reserve™ had one more authentic firehouse detail.
